And a bit of poetry...
needless to say, inspired by the recent discussions started by Ambrosia Dave's article.

(Thomas Eakins, The Swimming Hole, 1855)
Sex contains all,
Bodies, Souls, meanings, proofs, purities, delicacies, results, promulgations,
Songs, commands, health, pride, the maternal mystery, the seminal milk;
All hopes, benefactions, bestowals,
All the passions, loves, beauties, delights of the earth,
All the governments, judges, gods, follow’d persons of the earth,
These are contain’d in sex, as parts of itself, and justifications of itself.
(Walt Withman, Leaves of Grass, "A Woman Waits for Me")
[As I was trying to put together this post, looking and looking for images and quotes, the "making of" took on homoerotic undertones; I even found a discussion on trisexuality! And even though the post is somewhat modernist, I decided to leave it at that, since I got really horny in the process.]
Damn it, Dave, how can you live without sex? ;D

oh if only we had a quarter for every time history stopped short because it got horny by modernism.
Don't worry Andreea baby, your horniness will soon have an outlet. Now, am I right in saying that Whitman was gay? I'm pretty sure I remember that from somewhere. It's either that he was gay or he died of syphilis. I'm not going to google it because I'm sure Nicholas can correct me. Oh, and based on the response that Dave is getting from his article, that whole living without sex thing may change very soon.
Whitman was gay, sort of. He was clearly attracted to the butt sex, but no one's proved one way or the other that he had butt sex.
Whitman died of a stroke, or of complications resulting from a stroke; I don't remember which.
As for sex, I've got that covered (for me, not for the Romanian; sorry).
Oh boy, do I ever beg to differ with all this. The subjective intensity of sexual desire is NOT proof of its all-embracing importance. If it were, then Whitman could have written similar paeans to hunger, avarice, and boredom. (This is the failure of all poetries that take Romanticism as their starting point but never embrace romantic irony: all they can achieve is ever more baroque configurations of the pathetic fallacy.) We don't need to liberate our repressed desires (pace Freud), we may not even need to liberate ourselves from the whole discourse of "repression" itself and instead make recourse to "bodies and pleasures" (pace Foucault) - frankly, I just think we need to liberate ourselves from all this ponderous exaggeration of the cosmic significance of sex.
This entry is, like, SO two weeks ago, Marinescu. Are you so busy having your undercarriage tuned up that you can't put up a new post? Sheesh.
Yes, the answer to the question is yes.
